The advance of novel approaches using gene and cell therapy has the potential to transform patients’ lives, but may require adaptations in the existing healthcare system. While these transformative therapies could generate substantial health care cost savings over time due to long term clinical impact, the immediate cost of therapy is anticipated to be high in comparison to traditional medicines. Therefore, innovative reimbursement models will likely need to be implemented to address the possibility of temporary surges in demand, near term budget impact followed by longer term benefits and uncertainties in outcomes.
This session will explore the evolving global environment for gene therapies and highlight the latest thinking on potential opportunities, challenges and implications of new financing and reimbursement models.
